If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion.
For your passion will lead you right into your purpose.” ― T.D. Jakes

I’m often asked, “Why did you leave your highly rewarding software engineering career and start a natural skincare company RESHE Australia?” – so I want to shed some light on my personal story, and why I’m in this industry. In short, RESHE Australia is the result of a lifetime of my struggle with my self-confidence and color complexion.

I grew up in North India in the ’90s, drowning in a cultural obsession with having a ‘light complexion’. Growing up surrounded by a large extended family, I was the only dark child – the ugly duckling. I would often find myself being compared to my siblings and friends on a daily basis, strangers making snide comments seemingly more worried about my eligibility to get married than I was. This cultural stigma surrounding the fairness of my skin saw me quickly turn to use a variety of whitening creams, bleaches, and home remedies, to escape color-based prejudices. “Old habits don’t die soon”. I moved to Australia to pursue my Masters, got married and also carried my skin whitening creams on this journey as a loyal friend and still part of my daily skincare routine. It felt as if my deepest connection to home was through my bottle of whitening cream.

After a few years, the consequences of my lifelong obsession started to show its chemical effects. My face became covered in black-white patches, which slowly started to spread across the rest of my body. It was a huge blow to my confidence. I stopped leaving the house. I left my high-paying corporate job. I had become a shell of a person I once was. After seeing countless doctors and specialists,a renowned dermatologist in Sydney diagnosed me with a skin disorder named ‘Vitiligo’ also known as ‘Leucoderma’ (depigmenting disorder).

“So what is Vitiligo or Leucoderma?” you might ask. It is a skin disorder that causes loss of skin color in patches. It occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) die or stop functioning.

After hearing this, I had only two questions on my mind. “Is there a cure?” and “Why did this happen to me?” To answer the first question, currently, there is no set cure for vitiligo. There is a treatment, however, these harsh creams often result in the patient getting other skin conditions – in my case I developed hyper-sensitive skin and eczema.

Answering the second question was a little more difficult. Although genetics can influence the risk of vitiligo, they’re not the entire answer. We know this because identical twins, who for the most part have the exact same DNA, don’t always both get vitiligo. So what’s the rest of the story? Exposure to specific chemicals, some of which are used in the skincare industry, are an environmental agent that could induce vitiligo. A recent fascinating example of this occurred in the summer of 2013 in Japan when a cosmetics company developed a highly effective skin-lightening cream and sold it to hundreds of thousands of consumers. Unfortunately, over 18,000 users developed vitiligo after using it, leading to a recall of the product.

My dermatologist’s final diagnosis was that my Vitiligo was caused due to long-term exposure to certain chemicals found in fairness creams that block the body's natural pigmentation process. These chemicals can also cause a plethora of other health issues such as: • Dermatological Disorders • Thyroid • Diabetes • Acne

In short, my obsession with skin whitening creams is why my vitiligo developed. After this diagnosis, I became obsessed with researching clean skincare. To my surprise, most of the products I used daily, even ones declaring they are 100% naturally produced contained harsh ingredients and chemicals.

Now it became my personal mission to develop a range of skincare products that are completely chemical-free, natural as well as effective in reversing the aging process and provide a natural brightening glow, so other women wouldn’t have to go through the experiences I did. A skincare range that is safe to use for all skin types. And voila, RESHÉ Australia was born.
